Kisah cerita yang menarik
Drama bergenre historical romance, coming of age ini menceritakan para pemuda elite di masa Kerajaan Silla yang menjalin sebuah persahabatan di dalamnya. Pada masa pemerintahan tersebut, Ratu Jisoo yang memegang kendali kerajaan merahasiakan keberadaan putranya yaitu Raja Jinheung / Sam Maek JongTujuannya adalah untuk melindungi putranya dari para bangsawan lain yang ingin merebut tahta kerajaan. Tidak ada yang mengetahui bagaimana paras Raja Jinheung karena ketika ada yang melihatnya maka orang tersebut akan langsung dibunuh.
Suatu hari, ada dua orang pemuda bernama Sun Woo (Mak Moon) dan Moo Myung yang tanpa sengaja melihat paras raja tersebut sehingga langsung dibunuh oleh prajurit kerajaan. Namun, salah satu di antaranya yaitu Moo Myung berhasil selamat karena ditolong oleh ayah Sun Woo yang kemudian menganggapnya sebagai anak.
Mendekati waktu Raja untuk naik tahta, Kerajaan Silla membuka kessempatan bagi para pemuda dan putra bangsawan untuk bergabung dalam kelompok Hwarang. Kelompok ini merupakan pasukan elit yang bertujuan untuk melindungi Raja dan kerajaan.
Demi membalaskan dendamnya pada raja atas kematian sahabatnya, Moo Myung mendaftar dengan nama Sun Woo. Tidak hanya itu, raja juga ternyata ikut mendaftar menjadi salah satu prajurit dan ikut berlatih bersama dengan pemuda lainnya. Hubungan keduanya semakin memburuk ketika keduanya mencintai wanita yang sama, yaitu A-Ro yang merupakan adik kandung Sun Woo. Bagaimanakah kelanjutan kisah antara Moo Myung dan Raja? Akankah Moo Myung melanjutkan dendamnya dan membunuh raja? Atau menjalankan tugasnya sebagai prajurit Hwarang untuk melindungi Raja? Serta siapakah pemuda yang akan dipilih A-Ro?
